Ronald "Ronnie" Davis Shivers, Age 76, of Goodlettsville, passed away Saturday, September 13, 2014.
Mr. Shivers was preceded in death by parents, John Enoch and Lou Ella McCasland Shivers; brother, John McCasland "Mack" Shivers; and sisters, Helen Marie Shivers Knight, and Addie Mae Shivers.
He is survived by his brothers, Enoch "Allen" Shivers, Hendersonville, TN, and Charles Alexander "Alex" Shivers, Knoxville, TN.
Ronnie attended Union Hill Elementary School and graduated from Goodlettsville High School in 1957. He attended Cumberland College for 2 years in Lebanon , TN, and continued at UT/Knoxville to complete his BS degree in aeronautical engineering in 1963. The US Government hired him to work with the NASA program initially in Washington DC, and New Orleans, LA.
He worked at the Naval Ship Missile Systems Engineering Station (NSMSES) beginning in 1968 based in Oxnard, California. He was awarded the Apollo Achievement Award for contributions to America's space efforts. Shivers was commended for his participation in the test and evaluation phase of the Ship Position and Attitude Measurement System (SPAMS) in 5 Apollo ships. He was also responsible for the evaluation of the shipboard alignments of the radar telemetry and navigational systems in the USNS Vanguard, Redstone, Mercury, Huntsville, and Watertown.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 pm Monday at the Cole & Garrett Funeral Home, Goodlettsville. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 pm Tuesday, September 16, 2014, in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Nathan Loxley officiating. Burial will follow at 1 pm in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
